Arkansas Democrats Comment on Franklin County Resident Suing Gov. Sanders for Senate Dist. 26 Special Election Scheduling Scandal

Following the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reporting on a lawsuit filed by Senate District 26 residents, Arkansas Democrats are releasing the following statement.

Arkansas Democratic Party Chair Col. Marcus Jones (Ret.) said:

"Senate District 26 is standing up to fight for their representation at the State Capitol. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Gov. Sarah Sanders' unlawful attempt to deprive Arkansans of their voice in the State Senate is wrong, and we're looking forward to seeing how this lawsuit plays out in court."

Timeline of Events

September 2, 2025: Republican Senator Gary Stubblefield dies, creating vacancy in Senate District 26. Senator Gary Stubblefield was one of the most outspoken critics of building a prison in Franklin County.

Legal Requirement: Gov. Sanders has 150 days from the vacancy to call a special election

Friday, September 26, 2025 (Morning): Gov. Sanders issues initial proclamation setting special election date 427 days after the seat vacancy

Friday, September 26, 2025 (Afternoon): Arkansas Democrats issue this statement.

Friday, September 26, 2025 (9 PM): Gov. Sanders issues updated proclamation after receiving "feedback" - still sets election date 280 days after vacancy (130 days past the legal deadline)

Saturday, September 27, 2025 (Noon): Arkansas Democrats issue updated statement condemning the revised proclamation.

Monday, October 6, 2025 (2:30 PM): Franklin County resident files suit with the Governor and Secretary of State over unlawful election dates.

Tuesday, October 7, 2025 (Noon): Arkansas Democrats release the above statement in solidarity with the residents who are filing suit.
