Renowned German-American folk singer-songwriter Antje Duvekot will return to Mountain City Traditional Arts (MCTA) at Frostburg State University on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.
A seasoned performer who has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, Duvekot is an award-winning songwriter whose honors include the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, the prestigious Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival "Best New Folk Award" and a Boston Music Award for "Outstanding Folk Act."
Duvekot's newest album, New Wild West, marks a genuine shift in her songwriting, confronting many of the enduring themes she has explored throughout her career with a renewed sense of strength and determination. The songs reflect a willingness to confront trauma and push beyond familiar boundaries, with Duvekot's voice taking on a fierce, resilient quality.
The album grew out of a collaboration with acclaimed New England singer-songwriter Mark Erelli following a joint tour that inspired the idea for the project. Over the course of a year, Duvekot recorded most of her vocals from her home, while Erelli provided much of the instrumentation and production from his basement studio. The album also features guest appearances by Seth Glier, Robby Hecht, Winnie Horan, John Gorka, Richard Shindell and Kenny White.
In keeping with the album's themes of embracing new frontiers and stepping outside one's comfort zone, even the cover art reflects Duvekot's willingness to explore unfamiliar territory. The artwork was created using artificial intelligence, a process that initially made Duvekot uncomfortable but ultimately became part of the creative journey behind the album.
"The AI-generated image is evocative and uncannily fitting, yet I was uneasy about its non-human origin," she said. "In the end, I could not resist the poetry behind that discomfort, given the theme of the album!"
MCTA is a program of Frostburg State University and the Maryland Traditions Program of the Maryland State Arts Council.
