AUC Chairperson received by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, was received this evening at the Jubilee House in Accra by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana on the margins of the AU Health Summit.

President Mahama expressed his appreciation to the Chairperson for convening the AU Extraordinary Summit on Sustainable Health Financing, Domestic Health Manufacturing & Research in Accra, & reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to supporting the implementation of the Summit's outcomes. He expressed the hope that all AU Member States would similarly translate the decisions of the Summit into concrete action, noting that the Accra Declaration is fully aligned with the African Union's vision of strengthening the continent's self-reliance through expanded local production of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, & diagnostics.

The President further highlighted Ghana's continued investments in strengthening its national health system & expanding access to quality primary healthcare as part of the country's broader commitment to achieving universal health coverage. He also expressed appreciation to the AU Commission for its support for Ghana's initiative on reparatory justice at the UN General Assembly, which received the backing of the majority of UN Member States.

The Chairperson thanked President Mahama for Ghana's exemplary leadership in hosting the successful Extraordinary Summit & expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the Government & the people of Ghana to all participating delegations. He commended President Mahama's leadership & reaffirmed Ghana's important contribution to advancing the AU's Agenda 2063. He also applauded Ghana's progress in strengthening domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, describing it as an important example of the continental ambition to build resilient & self-sustaining health systems.

The Chairperson & President Mahama also exchanged views on recent incidents affecting African migrants in parts of the continent. They reaffirmed the AU's shared commitment to the protection of the rights, dignity & safety of all African citizens wherever they reside, underscoring the importance of addressing such challenges in a spirit of solidarity, dialogue & respect for the rule of law, while preserving the longstanding bonds of brotherhood & cooperation among AU Member States.
