Storm recovery continues in North Cheyenne Cañon Park; roads remain closed

Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services continues cleanup efforts in North Cheyenne Cañon Park following significant storm impacts that caused debris flows, road damage and unsafe conditions on North Cheyenne Canyon Road and Gold Camp Road.

Over the last two days, City crews have worked to remove large amounts of debris and scree from affected areas to allow for a thorough assessment of roadway conditions and storm-related damage. Crews are actively assessing conditions and continuing cleanup operations throughout the park.

North Cheyenne Canyon Road remains closed to vehicle traffic at the main entrance to North Cheyenne Cañon Park, and Gold Camp Road remains closed to vehicle traffic in the park beginning near Bonnie Vista Drive while City crews continue cleanup, assessment and repair work. A reopening timeline will be determined once damage assessments are complete and any necessary repairs have been identified.

North Cheyenne Cañon Park remains open for hiking and biking access on designated park trails. However, visitors are asked to stay off all roadways while cleanup and repair work is underway. Heavy equipment, maintenance vehicles and repair crews may be working on the roads at any time, creating hazardous conditions.

Due to the road closures:

  • There is no vehicle access to Helen Hunt Falls.
  • There is no access to the Powell parking area used to access Seven Bridges Trail.
  • Bicycles are not permitted on the closed roadways.
  • Visitors should remain on designated park trails and avoid all closed roads and work areas.

"We appreciate the public's patience as crews work to safely assess damage and determine the repairs needed to reopen these roads," said Regional Parks, Trails and Open Space Manager Scott Abbott. "The safety of visitors and staff remains our top priority."

The City is coordinating with organizers of the upcoming Pikes Peak APEX event to evaluate current conditions and determine whether any course modifications may be necessary.

Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
