The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, in partnership with the University of San Diego, hosted a Youth Leadership Development Forum on Oct. 29, 2026. The YLDF brought together over 200 high school students for hands-on learning experience in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and college readiness.
Students were welcomed by HACU Executive Vice President for Programs and Operations David A. Ortiz, USD Executive Director of Public Affairs and Strategic Communications Lissette Martinez, and USD Professor and Co-Chair of the Hispanic-Serving Institution Advisory Council Reyes Quezada.
The day also featured a panel discussion with University of San Diego students and faculty, an Admissions and Career Development Center session, and campus tour.
The YLDF is offered as pre-conference event of HACU's Annual Conference. Students participate in hands-on activities in STEM, while exploring how these fields can shape their future studies and career paths. The goal is to inspire California's youth to complete high school and continue their studies in higher education.
This year's activities focused on lab sessions at various campus locations, including hands-on nursing and physics activities; demonstrations on neuroscience, cognition and behavior; chemistry and biochemistry; engineering introduction to energy, rapid prototyping, visual-spatial skills, design thinking and group activity; and biology demonstrations.
