We are aware of chalking in Red Square. We condemn this language and its timing, which is deeply inconsistent with Georgetown University's values of compassion and care for others.
While Georgetown's Speech and Expression Policy gives broad latitude for the free expression of ideas and opinions, it also explicitly calls on us to share in the responsibility for maintaining civil and respectful discourse. The language used in the chalking is deeply hurtful, especially on this anniversary of the horrific attack of innocent civilians.
We are monitoring this closely to ensure the safety of the university community. Georgetown is committed to ensuring that all members of our community have a safe and welcoming place to learn and receive the support they need to do so.
As a Jesuit, Catholic university, Georgetown is deeply committed to fostering an environment that respects the inherent dignity of each member of our community, and we have worked proactively to live our our mission statement, which calls for "serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs". This is animated by a Campus Ministry with Chaplains across different faith denominations. Mental and emotional well-being resources are available via the Every Hoya Cares online resource center.
