KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City, Mo. man has been sentenced in federal court for illegally possessing a firearm.
Marcos L. Fernandez, 39, was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes to 87 months in federal prison without parole for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also was sentenced to a concurrent 36-month term of imprisonment for being a violent felon in possession of body armor.
On May 17, 2025, North Kansas City Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in which Fernandez was a passenger. During the stop, officers saw a firearm on the driver-side floorboard and removed both occupants. Fernandez, a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Taurus G2C 9mm handgun and a loaded drum-style pistol magazine. DNA analysis later confirmed Fernandez's DNA on the firearm.
Fernandez was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the time of his arrest, he was also wearing body armor, which he is federally prohibited from possessing due to multiple prior robbery and armed criminal action convictions.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney James Kirkpatrick and investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
