More than 150 faculty from across Stony Brook University were recognized earlier this semester for earning promotion.

The event, held for the second time at the university, celebrates excellence in research and scholarship, teaching, and service across academic disciplines.

Across the university, more than 150 faculty were promoted and rose to the rank of associate professor, associate clinical professor, or associate librarian, or were promoted to full professor, full clinical professor, or full librarian. Of that 150, 50 also earned tenure.

The event was hosted jointly by Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl W. Lejuez and Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine William Wertheim, MD.

Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith congratulated the honored faculty at the celebration.

"If I could say one thing today, it's to tell you to take a moment and celebrate this amazing accomplishment. We celebrate your research and scholarship and take inspiration from your commitment to mentoring and what you have done for your students," said Lejuez. "We love to talk about rankings, but what makes Stony Brook special is the people and your commitment to collaboration, education, mentoring, and scholarship."

In general, tenure-track faculty at Stony Brook University have seven years to earn the marks of excellence that merit tenure: a commitment to excellent teaching, service to the academic discipline and the university and/or clinical service, and research or scholarship as demonstrated by grants awards, peer-reviewed papers, books, and other publications including works of art and musical performances.

"Each of you is committed to pursue knowledge, to pursue wisdom and to pass it on to your students," said Wertheim. "We are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant academic community, not just for your ideas and not just for your innovation, but also for your commitment to doing the right things for the right reasons. I look forward to seeing how your work will continue to shape the future of our university and our broader communities."
