4.41 million under temporary protection in June 2026

On 30 June 2026, a total of 4.41 million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine had temporary protection status in the EU. Compared with the end of May 2026, the number of people from Ukraine under temporary protection increased by 24 380 (+0.6%).

The EU countries hosting the highest number of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine were Germany (1 286 230 people; 29.2% of the EU total), Poland (961 170; 21.8%) and Czechia (390 810; 8.9%).

Compared with the end of May 2026, the number of people under temporary protection increased in 24 of the 27 EU countries, with the 3 largest absolute increases observed in Italy (+4 115; +8.8%), Czechia (+3 835; +1.0%) and Germany (+2 960; +0.2%). The 3 countries that registered decreases were Poland (-6 335; -0.7%), Belgium (-35; -0.04%) and Ireland (-15; -0.01%).

The highest ratios of temporary protection beneficiaries per thousand people were observed in Czechia at 35.8, Slovakia (27.2) and Cyprus (26.8), compared with 9.8 at EU level.

On 30 June 2026, Ukrainian citizens represented over 98.5% of the beneficiaries of temporary protection in the EU. Adult women made up 43.4% of the total, adult men 27%, and minors almost one-third (29.6%) of all beneficiaries.

The data presented in this article refer to the attribution of temporary protection status based on the Council Implementing Decision 2022/382 of 4 March 2022, which recognises the existence of a mass influx of displaced persons from Ukraine due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, and introduces temporary protection.

On 13 June 2025, the European Council adopted the decision to extend the temporary protection for these people from 4 March 2026 to 4 March 2027.
