TWU Theatre announces four productions for 2026-27 season

July 9, 2026 ― DENTON ― TWU Theatre has selected four plays for the 2026-27 season, all under the central theme of "Defying the Dark," exploring the battles we fight, the stories we inherit and the underlying belief in one another as human beings.

The season will open Oct. 21 withThe Night Witches, the original work by TWU associate professor Steven Young, inspired by the legendary all-female Soviet bomber pilots of World War II. The play celebrates courage, sacrifice and the unbreakable bonds forged in impossible circumstances, and will run through Oct. 25. It's also a participating entry in the American College Theatre Festival.

Guest artist Susan Carol Davis will direct Bleachers by Noah Haidle, which follows four tuba players in the marching band who grapple with bullies, ambition and identity across the course of a football season. The show will run Nov. 18-22.

Heading into 2027, Steven Young will direct Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? During a long night of cocktails and confrontation, George and Martha invite a younger couple into their home and slowly dismantle the illusions sustaining all four of their lives. The show will premiere Feb. 17 and run through the 21st.

The season will close with Stephen Schwartz's and John-Michael Tebelak's Godspell, a collaboration between TWU's theatre and music divisions. The new production reminds theatre-goers that unity and compassion have the power to triumph over darkness and division. Directed by Dr. Patrick Bynane, the show will run from April 9-11 and 16-18.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. TWU Theatre offers a pay-what-you-can option available for every Saturday 2 p.m. performance.
