Nurses to participate in July 25 protests nationwide

National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States, announced today that RNs will be joining protests on Saturday, July 25 to demand justice for the murders of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

"We demand justice for the tragic murders of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, who should be alive today," said Puneet Maharaj, executive director of NNU. "ICE must be held fully accountable for these murders and the violence they are committing in our communities. We must end this fascist violence by abolishing ICE."

Nurses will be participating in protests in California (Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco), Illinois (Chicago), and Maryland (Hyattsville).

Earlier this month, NNU condemned the murders of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastian Durán Guerrero and reiterated the union's call to abolish ICE. Since January 2026, NNU has consistently called for ICE's abolition and nurses have taken several actions to demand an end to this campaign of community harassment and endangerment.

NNU represents more than 225,000 nurses across the nation and advocates for policies and legislation that improve the lives of nurses and communities everywhere.
