Alma, K.S. - Today, Katie Gorka, U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education, visited Wabaunsee Senior High School as part of the U.S. Department of Education's national History Rocks!Trail to Independence tour, in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday. The tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles.
Two hundred seventy-five students in sixth through twelfth grades participated in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics and the important role Kansas has played in our nation's history. The event opened with remarks from Wabaunsee Principal Jan Hutley and Superintendent of Wabaunsee Schools Dr. Troy Pitsch, followed by Senior Advisor Gorka. Students explored the themes of civic engagement, patriotism, and the shared responsibilities of citizenship.
"Kansas reflects the spirit of hard work, independence, and civic responsibility that has long defined our nation," said U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education Katie Gorka. "As we approach our nation's 250th anniversary, History Rocks! helps students connect those values to the American story and see how they can carry them forward in their own communities."
