Scholarships Support Adult Learners in SWOSU’s Reach Higher Program

The Reach Higher degree-finishing program at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) awarded over $15,000 in scholarships to fourteen SWOSU students completing degrees through the program. Recipients received awards averaging about $1,100, supported through the statewide Finish Line scholarship initiative.

The Finish Line scholarship program provides ongoing funding to State System colleges and universities that offer adult degree completion pathways through Reach Higher. These scholarships assist adult learners who are close to finishing their degrees. Reach Higher is a degree-finishing program designed for individuals who previously completed college coursework but did not earn a degree. Most students enrolled in the program at SWOSU complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership, with concentrations available in business, education, psychology or technology.

"I am proud to return to school and be part of this program," said Bobbi Gray of Altus. "I can't wait to walk the stage at age 55 and display my degree on my office wall."

Joe Clemons of Oklahoma City said his return to college reflects both a personal goal and an example for his two sons. "Life has been an uphill battle financially, emotionally and spiritually, but I never lost sight of the importance of education," Clemons said. "My sons have seen me struggle, but I want them to also see me succeed. Earning my bachelor's degree is not just for me-it's a statement to them that we can rewrite the narrative so often imposed on Black families. We are not statistics. We are builders of legacy."

Chasity Butts of Yukon has appreciated the flexibility of the online format and noted the degree's value in her career plans. "I feel that the Organizational Leadership degree, along with my current experience, will give me an edge in the competitive job market," Butts said. "It will give me opportunities I wouldn't have otherwise."

Dr. Todd Wiggen, the coordinator of SWOSU's Organizational Leadership program, Reach Higher Flex Finish, said the adult-friendly degree completion options through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education encourage adults who have earned some college credit to complete their degrees successfully.

"The program is geared to working adults by offering flexible enrollment and online coursework. Students can go as fast or as slow as they want and are able," said Wiggen. "Many of our students may only take a class or two a semester due to their other obligations, and others will take five to six courses to try and finish as rapidly as possible. It is truly up to the individual."

The Reach Higher and Organizational Leadership program is currently accepting students for the 2026 spring semester at SWOSU, and limited scholarship funding may be available.
