WHO and the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan collaborate to strengthen laboratory biosafety and biosecurity in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

18 June 2026 - The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) of Jordan have launched a new collaboration to strengthen laboratory biosafety and biosecurity across the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

The partnership focuses on competency-based training and technical support to strengthen the skills of laboratory personnel and biomedical engineers and build expertise in biosafety cabinet validation and certification to support safer laboratory operations.

The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean will provide technical guidance aligned with global and regional priorities, helping to ensure that all training content reflects the latest scientific evidence and international best practices. RSS will support implementation as an in-kind partner by supporting workforce capacity-building activities, delivering specialized training and technical support for biomedical engineers and contributing to the development and operationalization of practical tools and training pathways aligned with regional strategies.

The 2-year partnership is designed to ensure sustainable impact and long-term strengthening of laboratory systems. It is expected to contribute to:

  • enhanced biosafety and biosecurity competencies among laboratory personnel and biomedical engineers;
  • increased technical capacity for biosafety cabinet validation and certification within national laboratory systems;
  • strengthened biosafety compliance and safety culture across laboratory networks; and
  • improved alignment of laboratory biosafety practices with international standards and good practices.

By combining technical expertise and collaborative action, the partnership marks a step forward in building safer laboratories and more resilient health systems capable of responding effectively to emerging health threats in the countries and territories of the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
