UNESCO and the Ministry of Education bring together education leaders to advance the implementation of Education for Peace in Latin America and the Caribbean

UNESCO's 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development is the main global normative instrument guiding States on how to use education to build peaceful, just and sustainable societies. Adopted by all 194 Member States, it updates the historic 1974 Recommendation and responds to contemporary challenges such as climate change, inequality, hate speech and conflicts.

This framework sets guiding principles and learning outcomes that promote knowledge, skills and values to shape global citizens committed to peace and sustainability. It also defines priority areas for action in education policies, curricula, pedagogies, teacher training and inclusive learning environments.

The Recommendation proposes a holistic and integrated approach, linking education for peace and citizenship, human rights, sustainable development, gender equality and cultural and artistic education. Its goal is for education to transform the way people relate to each other and to the planet.

This instrument seeks to move from commitments to action, offering countries a roadmap to implement policies and practices that ensure transformative education capable of responding to the diversity and challenges of Latin America, the Caribbean and the world.
