Detour map for full weekend closure of I-285 NB/SB between MLK Jr. Drive and Cascade Road.
Fulton County...
ALL LANES CLOSED on I-285 in SW Fulton - August 14-17, Cascade Road to MLK Jr. Drive (NB and SB), Traffic will be Detoured - Expect Extreme Travel Delays, Plan Alternate Routes
Next Full Closure Planned 8/28-31, Cascade to SR 166/Langford Pkwy
ATLANTA - Work crews for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will close all northbound and southbound lanes of I-285 in southwest Fulton County this weekend, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14 and continue to 5.a.m. on Monday, August 17. These closures continue the ongoing I-285 Westside Rebuild concrete slab reconstruction and rehabilitation project currently ongoing along the westside of the I-285 corridor from State Route (SR) 14/South Fulton Parkway in College Park to Collier Road.

Detour signs will direct all northbound and southbound I-285 traffic approaching the closure to use SR 166/Langford Parkway, the I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector and I-20.

Weather and on-site conditions permitting, these are the lane and ramp closures scheduled from 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14 through 5 a.m. on Monday, August 17:

I-285 northbound:
  • All lanes closed between Cascade Road (exit 7) and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (exit 9)
I-285 southbound:
  • All lanes closed between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (exit 9) and Cascade Road (exit 7)
Crews will be milling/grinding the roadway concrete in preparation to repair or replace the concrete slabs through the project area. Lane closures are necessary to provide sufficient space for crews to work safely and to protect motorists while large equipment is in operation. Motorists are urged to pay attention to shifting and changing travel infrastructure along the corridor. Roadside message boards and signage will alert drivers in advance of lane shifts and closures.

Motorists who use this segment of I-285 should make plans now to allow significant additional travel time during these closures, or to plan alternate routes in advance. GDOT strongly urges motorists to rely on the 511GA app as the primary source for real-time traffic conditions and lane closure details. Motorists may also use their preferred navigation or wayfinding apps; however, 511GA provides the most up-to-date, Georgia-specific information to help drivers navigate around the closures as efficiently as possible.
See attached graphic illustrating the recommended detour. Overhead message boards and roadside signage will alert drivers well in advance of the closure.
PROJECT DETAILS
This closure supports the ongoing I-285 Westside reconstruction project, which spans 10 miles from SR 14/South Fulton Parkway in College Park to Collier Road.
Contractor work crews will:
  • Mill and grind existing concrete pavement
  • Prepare for slab repair and replacement
Full closure is required to:
  • Safely accommodate heavy equipment operations
  • Provide adequate workspace for crews
  • Protect motorists

Please note that additional full closures of segments of I-285 are expected to help facilitate faster construction for the duration of these projects.

PLAN BEFORE YOU GO
Motorists should:
  • Avoid the I-285 corridor on the west side of Atlanta
  • Review routes before starting any trip this weekend
  • Use the 511GA app or other wayfinding apps for real-time Georgia-specific updates
  • Expect changing traffic patterns and follow all posted signage

PROJECT OVERVIEW
This $206 million effort is one of two major projects to repair and replace concrete slabs along the I-285 westside corridor. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2028.

SAFETY REMINDER
Drivers are urged to:
  • Wear seatbelts
  • Slow down in and around work zones
  • Follow all posted signage
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions
  • Move over at least one lane when possible, to allow crews room to work
