VENTURA, Calif. - Patagonia announced today that customers can now purchase Worn Wear products on patagonia.com, reinforcing the company's commitment to keep its products in use longer.
Worn Wear is Patagonia's used clothing business. The company buys back used gear from customers in exchange for Patagonia gift cards. Patagonia employees inspect every product for eligibility, authenticity, condition, functionality and cleanliness. They accept trade-ins at all Patagonia retail stores in the U.S. and on Patagonia.com.
As of today, Patagonia customers can purchase new and used clothing in the same transaction on patagonia.com. Before this, customers had to use two separate websites - one for new products and one for Worn Wear. The move supports the company's long-held belief that durable products made to last can play a part in solutions to the climate and nature crisis.
"One of the best things we can do for the planet is to keep what we own in play for as long as possible and push back against a culture of endless consumption," said Sam Brown, head of resale at Patagonia. "We're connecting new and used shopping modes, not just to improve the customer experience, but also to create a less-harmful way of doing business, one that extends the life of the things we've already made with resources we've already extracted."
Worn Wear will be supported by an enriched experience, where customers can search for used and new inventory on one website, then check out in a single cart. Centralizing the shopping experience is the last step in a fully in-house Worn Wear business. The company previously brought all Worn Wear warehousing, shipping and customer service operations in-house. Patagonia had previously outsourced those operations to a third party.
"Our designers relentlessly focus on quality," Brown said. "We build products to be durable and timeless, and we back all new and used products with our warranty, the Ironclad Guarantee. Moving Worn Wear onto patagonia.com will immediately put Worn Wear in front of a larger audience and make it easier for customers to opt for used instead of new."
