Washington, DC - Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Co-Chair of the House Great Lakes Task Force, traveled to Ottawa, Canada today alongside Republican Co-Chair of the House Great Lakes Task Force Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-04) to lead a bipartisan dialogue as part of the US-Canada Interparliamentary Group, a binational forum focused on strengthening cross-border cooperation.
Canada is Ohio's largest trading partner, and together our economies form what many economists call 'The Great Lakes Nation.' It is the third-largest economy in the world. Canada and the United States are tied together by commerce, culture, geography, and shared history. Last year trade between Canada and Ohio totaled $38.9 Billion and helped support over 300,000 jobs in the Buckeye State.
"I am traveling to Ottawa to participate in talks with our Canadian Parliamentary counterparts about our shared border and increasing concerns about the impact of tariffs on goods, agricultural and industrial production, resources, shipping, and tourism," said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). "Shared border security improvements are also an important topic of conversation, as will Canada's Space Agency's ongoing cooperation with NASA. For generations, our two nations have shared the bounty of our freshwater Lakes, shipping billions of metric tons of cargo through the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway each year. The Inter-Lake corridor played hockey side by side, attended Shakespeare Festivals together, cheered for our hockey and baseball teams, and rallied our nation to fight against enemies of Liberty. As Co-Chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, it is always a privilege to participate in these bilateral discussions to continue building forward our mutual interests as we await the official dedication of the Gordie Howe Bridge that will link our nations' economies even more securely for the generations to come."
The Ottawa meetings will address a range of pressing issues, including:
-
The effect of tariffs on goods, agriculture, industrial output, and regional supply chains
-
Enhancing shared border security and infrastructure
-
Protecting and sustaining the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway
-
Expanding cooperation between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency
The US-Canada Interparliamentary Group fosters dialogue between legislators from both countries, strengthening understanding and advancing solutions to shared challenges.
