Paper ID Card expiration date: August 3

Starting August 3, 2026, the paper ID card will cease to be valid in both Italy and other European Union countries, regardless of the expiration date shown on the back.

From that date, the only valid format will be the Electronic Identity Card (EIC).

Starting June 1, Italian citizens living abroad (AIRE) may also apply for the EIC at any Italian Municipality, as specified by Law No. 11 of 19 January, 2026.
