The Government has nominated Yolanda Díaz as a candidate for the post of Director-General of the International Labour Organization

The International Labour Organization, founded in 1919 and the first specialised agency of the United Nations, brings together governments, employers' organisations and trade unions from its 187 Member States. Its tripartite structure makes it a unique institution within the international system and the leading forum for the development of labour standards, the promotion of employment, social protection and the strengthening of social dialogue.

As Second Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz has spearheaded some of the most significant labour and social reforms of recent years, all of which have been achieved through social dialogue, resulting in 30 agreements. Over the past few years, the labour reform agreed with trade unions and employers has been implemented, which has helped to reduce temporary employment to historic lows whilst achieving record levels of employment in Spain's history, alongside the introduction of the law on online platforms and the largest increase in the national minimum wage since the restoration of democracy.

Through this candidacy, Spain aims to strengthen a key institution in tackling the challenges of the labour market against a backdrop of far-reaching economic, technological and environmental changes, thereby reinforcing the ILO's role as a global leader in the promotion of decent work and social justice. Spain is the country that has signed the most ILO conventions (141) of any in the world, demonstrating its commitment to the institution.

If elected, Yolanda Díaz would be the first Spaniard and the first woman to head the International Labour Organization.
