Amprion has refinanced its existing €3.2 billion syndicated loan ahead of maturity and successfully signed a new syndicated revolving credit facility in a total amount of €6.5 billion with a group of 15 banks. With the integrated "Green Pure Play" concept, Amprion is consistently advancing its green financing strategy in line with its increasing investment volume.
By significantly increasing the facility size, Amprion is strengthening its funding base while at the same time meeting the requirements of its international rating agencies.
International expansion of the banking syndicate to 15 institutions
With the new syndicated loan agreement, Amprion is deepening its long-standing and successful banking relationships with Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB), Commerzbank, DZ Bank, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen, ING, SEB and UniCredit. New lenders joining the banking syndicate are BNP Paribas, Bank of America, Crédit Agricole, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Royal Bank of Canada, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. This significantly broadens the international footprint of Amprion's core relationship banking group. BNP Paribas, ING and UniCredit acted as coordinators on this transaction.
The syndicated facility has an initial tenor of five years with two extension options of one year each. In addition, the agreement includes an incremental facility option of €2 billion (both subject to the approval of the participating banks).
"Green Pure Play" as an innovative new green concept
With the new agreement, Amprion is also embedding sustainability to which the company has been consistently committed for years into its short-term financing. The integrated green concept is the first of its kind. More than 90 percent of Amprion's revenues must remain aligned with the EU Taxonomy for the company to maintain its "Green Pure Player" status over the lifetime of the facility, without having to earmark and track the use of proceeds for specific green projects.
Peter Rüth, CFO of Amprion, says: "With the new €6.5 billion 'Energiewende Green Revolving Credit Facility', we are strengthening our financial flexibility while at the same time underlining our long-term sustainability-oriented financing strategy. The new syndicated loan is a central pillar of our funding and forms the backbone for our investments in the grid business. It also demonstrates that our longstanding as well as our new banking partners stand reliably and trustfully by our side as we move forward with the energy transition."
