Cyber Resilience in a Hybrid Cloud World

Guest blog by Paul Norton, Director of pre-sales at Rackspace Technology

The Threat Landscape Has Changed

Cyberattacks are no longer rare events - they're a daily threat. In the UK, 70% of large firms and 74% of medium-sized businesses reported a breach last year. Today's attackers are organised, well-funded and deliberate, often spending weeks inside systems before launching coordinated strikes that disable backups, corrupt identity platforms and disrupt communications.

Why Traditional Recovery Fails

Most disaster recovery (DR) plans were built for predictable outages - not targeted sabotage. When attackers compromise identity systems, encrypt backups and take down communication platforms, recovery becomes chaotic, slow or even impossible. Without access to documentation or tools, IT teams are left scrambling.

A Strategic Framework for Resilience

True cyber resilience requires a shift from reactive recovery to proactive strategy. It's built on four key pillars:

  • Business Impact Analysis (BIA): Identify critical processes and quantify the cost of downtime.
  • Isolated Recovery Environments (IREs): Enable clean restoration in secure, air-gapped zones.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Automate recovery with speed, consistency and confidence.
  • Cyber-integrated Business Continuity Planning (BCP): Ensure operational continuity across the organisation.

These pillars work together to create a recovery model that's fast, reliable and secure - even under pressure.

The Role of War Games

War game exercises are essential. These realistic simulations expose blind spots, test decision-making under stress and build muscle memory across teams. Organisations that run regular war games report stronger coordination, faster recovery and fewer surprises during real incidents.

Regulatory Pressure Is Rising

With frameworks like NIS2, DORA and SEC disclosure rules tightening, resilience is now a board-level priority. Organisations with structured recovery strategies report 51% shorter downtimes and 63% lower recovery costs. Resilience isn't just about survival - it's a competitive advantage.
