Jackson Ward Day

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Jackson Ward Day

WHEREAS, Jackson Ward stands as one of the most historically significant African American communities in the United States, long recognized as a center of Black commerce, culture, political leadership, and artistic excellence; and

WHEREAS, during the early 20th century, Jackson Ward earned the name "The Harlem of the South" for its vibrant music scene, thriving businesses, and the creative energy that shaped generations of artists, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders; and

WHEREAS, the neighborhood's early development was shaped by residents such as Abraham Peyton Skipwith, whose presence and legacy reflect the deep roots of craftsmanship, stability, and community pride that helped define Jackson Ward's character; and

WHEREAS, Jackson Ward became home to extraordinary leaders including Maggie Lena Walker, the first woman in the United States to charter and serve as president of a bank; and

WHEREAS, John Mitchell Jr., editor of The Richmond Planet, used the power of journalism to champion civil rights, challenge injustice, and elevate the voices of African Americans during the post-Civil War era; and

WHEREAS, Giles Beecher Jackson, the first African American to practice law before the Supreme Court of Virginia, played a vital role in the civic life of Jackson Ward; and

WHEREAS, Jackson Ward also nurtured the early life of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who rose to become one of the most celebrated tap dancers in American history; and

WHEREAS, these individuals-along with countless residents, entrepreneurs, artists, and community builders-helped shape Jackson Ward into a national symbol of African American achievement, resilience, and cultural vitality;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize April 17, 2026, as JACKSON WARD DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
