Governor Polis Joins Local Leaders, Businesses, and Emergency Responders in Leadville; Highlights Successful Fire Response and Strong Local Economy

LEADVILLE - Today, Governor Polis heard from local leaders, businesses and emergency responders from Leadville about the swift and successful local response to the Willow Fire, and highlighted Leadville's strong recreational and tourism industry.

"This has been a challenging wildfire season, and I am grateful and amazed for our firefighters and first responders who act swiftly in the face of natural disasters to protect our communities and keep Coloradans safe. Our mountain communities draw tourists from across the country and around the world, and Leadville is at the beating heart, providing visitors with amazing outdoor recreation opportunities, dining, and the experience to learn the great history of our amazing state. I am always grateful for the opportunity to meet with our local leaders, businesses and emergency responders to learn how we can better serve Coloradans and recover from this summer's wildfires," said Governor Polis.

Governor Polis first issued a verbal disaster declaration for the Willow Fire in Lake County on June 29th, 2026. On July 5th Governor Polis announced the Willow Fire was authorized for a Fire Management Assistance Grant, which allows the state to be reimbursed up to 75% for firefighting costs. The Governor issued an Executive Order to memorialize the verbal disaster declaration on August 2nd, 2026. The fire was managed by a series of highly skilled Complex Incident Management Teams that worked closely with state and locals. The Lake County Sheriff and Emergency Manager and Teams provided critical support as the fire response quickly exceeded local capabilities. As of today, the Willow Fire has burned over 7,000 acres and is 80% contained.

Tourism is vital to Colorado mountain towns, and Leadville remains open for business. Governor Polis encourages Coloradans and visitors to explore Leadville. Hike the Mineral Belt Trail, hike Mount Massive, see the fall colors, shop and eat locally, and take advantage of everything Lake County has to offer.
