Welcome Lindsey Minor to the Office of Immigrant Affairs team

Tell us about yourself:

Hi! My name is Lindsey Minor! I am a rising junior at Temple University studying Political Science and Global Studies. I am a student-athlete and compete for Temple's Division l Women's Fencing Team, ranked in the Top 10 of the nation. I also recently participated in Temple's Community Scholars Program, where I worked with local organizations and community leaders to create effective civic engagement strategies within Philadelphia. I am extremely excited to intern with the Office of Immigrant Affairs, which will provide me the chance to interact with and directly impact Philadelphia's immigrant communities.

Where are you originally from and why did you come to Philly?

I was raised in South Orange, New Jersey but my family moved to Philly after I graduated high school. South Orange has a rich sense of diversity, as well as a large Haitian immigrant population. Growing up in a community-focused environment taught me to treasure diversity, which is why I chose to come to Philly, a city with many cultures and a rich history. Being surrounded by people with different experiences and backgrounds has always been extremely important to me, and I feel lucky to have found that in Philadelphia.

What do you do in your free time?

Whenever I'm free I like exploring different neighborhoods in Philadelphia and trying new foods! I've always been a foodie and love the chance to try something new. I've even recently begun reviewing restaurants for fun! I also love spending time outdoors. I really enjoy hiking in the Wissahickon and hanging out around different creeks and streams.

What do you hope to accomplish in your internship?

Throughout the course of this internship I hope to gain a better understanding of the inner-workings of local government. Since municipal governments directly impact their constituents, I wish to learn more about the decision making processes and the responsibility that comes with this work. I am excited to witness first hand how policy making and commitment to community influence the people within this city.

While working in the Office of Immigrant Affairs, I hope to hear more immigrant voices and be instrumental in providing helpful services, events, and support for this community in Philadelphia. I am eager to work with the OIA team to gain experience implementing policies and programs that benefit Philadelphia's immigrant communities.

Do you have a favorite memory of Philadelphia?

My favorite memory of Philadelphia is definitely when the Eagles won the Superbowl. I have never been a huge football fan, but the Eagles are something special. Seeing so many people come together on Broad Street that night to celebrate reminded me of how unique and truly united this city is. I always enjoy any parade or celebration in Philly, but that night showed the fiery spirit and personality of this city.
