16-Song Collection Features Grammy-Winning Legend Lisa Fischer
"Whatever you're going through, you need to continue believing, loving your family, your community and building legacy. Because if we don't build it ourselves, who will?" That is how vocalist Quiana Parler describes the music and message behind This Village, the new 16-song collection out today from two-time GRAMMY winners Ranky Tanky. Passionate ambassadors for the songs and stories of the Gullah people, the South Carolina five-piece continue sharing this often-overlooked portion of the American story with the world on This Village. Through honoring these traditions - passed down from enslaved West Africans in the region, and preserved by their descendants for generations - Ranky Tanky hope to share "what the Gullah community is all about." As the group's Charlton Singleton puts it: "it's all about those four big principles that we talk about so much: love and peace and joy and happiness."

"Gullah has always been here. It's always been around. It's always fed music, and it's always fed different parts of the United States in all kinds of ways, as a substratum of culture, music, food, all of it, art ways. I'm really hoping that people hear this music, get a better understanding about what the Gullah culture stands for, and how it stands boldly and humbly as well." - Quentin Baxter, drummer and producer
"This Village makes me think of family. It makes me think of the Carolinas. It makes me think of the Lowcountry. It makes me think of the messages of love and resilience and strength that come from specifically the Gullah community and more generally just the Carolina home that I know and love." - Clay Ross, guitar and vocals
"When people hear this album, I hope they feel heard. I hope they feel like they're not alone. And I hope they feel like anything is possible. Right now that's important because there's so much uncertainty for the future. And music in particular is something that we can always have in life that gives us faith and hope in the future." -Kevin Hamilton, bass
On this new album, Ranky Tanky have returned with more of their own original music than ever before - steeped in the rich traditions of the Gullah community. They are joined on the album by legendary multi-time GRAMMY winner Lisa Fischer for two interpretations of classics: a cover of Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands," and their own arrangement of the traditional "Pick'n Po Robin" (featured prominently in the recent Sinners soundtrack). Each of the five band members participated in the writing process on This Village, with additional collaborators including GRAMMY Award-winning engineers Vance Powell (Sputnik Sound - Chris Stapleton, Jack White), Elliott Elsey (Truphonic Recording) and Vlado Meller (Vlado Meller Mastering), as well as Demetrius Doctor (piano, string arrangement - "This Village").
With the new album, Ranky Tanky look to build on a sound that has already brought them to #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts and media spotlights from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and the TODAY Show to NPR's Fresh Air and PBS Newshour.
