Tempe stopped using automated license plate readers in August and canceled its contract with Flock. A proposed ordinance would put that decision into City Code. Take the short survey by Tuesday, Sept. 15.
If approved, the ordinance would prohibit City use and funding of ALPR systems for law enforcement, including entering into future contracts for the technology. It would still allow the City to use ALPR data collected by other agencies or private systems in specific circumstances, including some multi-agency investigations, searches for missing or endangered people and when authorized through a search warrant, court order or subpoena.
The proposal would also allow some non-law-enforcement uses, such as managing City parking lots or garages. Watch a video explaining the ordinance. The proposed ordinance is scheduled to go to the full City Council for discussion and public input on Sept. 24. The survey is open through Sept. 15.
