The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, today received the Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Marcin Czepelak, in Madrid, with whom he signed the agreement for the establishment of an office of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Spain.
During the meeting, they discussed the importance of this body in the peaceful resolution of international disputes, Spain's shared and firm commitment to an international order based on international law, and the importance of the Spanish language in the legal sphere, as the Court's presence in Spain strengthens its global reach and will bring its services closer to a broad Spanish-speaking community.
The opening of a branch of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Spain marks a major milestone for the country's international standing as a forum for dispute resolution. This decision recognises the strength of the Spanish legal system, the excellence of its legal professionals and Spain's growing capacity to host international arbitration proceedings. Furthermore, it reinforces the country's role as a bridge between Europe, Latin America and the Mediterranean, consolidating its position in the field of international justice and legal diplomacy.
"This agreement represents a highly significant step towards making Spain a well-established and leading centre for arbitration. Spain is, without a doubt, an ideal location for the Permanent Court of Arbitration to carry out its work, thanks to our strategic position, our legal excellence and our institutional stability," Minister Albares emphasised.
Albares also stressed that "this agreement is particularly significant as it enables us to promote our language, Spanish, as a truly global language; including in the legal sphere".
