Traffic Stop and Seizure of 473 Grams of Methamphetamine and Two Firearms Results in Lengthy Federal Sentence for Elton Man

LAKE CHARLES - On October 15, 2026, United States District Judge James D. Cain, Jr. sentenced Steven Dwight Savoy, 38, of Elton, to 170 months (over 14 years) in federal prison for Possessing a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime, followed by four years of supervised release. He previously pled guilty to the charge on July 20, 2026.

According to court documents, on January 8, 2025, a Louisiana State Police (LSP) trooper conducted a traffic stop on an older model blue Ford F-250 on LA Highway 27 in Sulphur. The driver, identified as Savoy, was found in possession of approximately 473 grams of methamphetamine confirmed through lab testing. A digital scale with methamphetamine residue was also located in the center console. Officers additionally recovered a Kahr .40 caliber handgun between the driver's seat and center console, and a Radical Firearms .223/5.56 caliber rifle placed on the passenger seat. Both firearms were situated near the illicit drugs. Savoy admitted he was aware of the rifle in the vehicle and knowingly possessed it during the transportation of the methamphetamine, which he intended to sell. Savoy further acknowledged that he was a convicted felon at the time of the offense which made it illegal for him to possess firearms.

U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Keller for the Western District of Louisiana made the announcement.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and LSP investigated this case. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Nickel with assistance from Legal Assistant Kimberly Blanchard.
