CHARLESTON, W.Va. - U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Appropriations Subcommittee, announced a $15 million Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) award for Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
This award, which was secured through a CDS request made by Senator Capito in Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26), will support the development of the Marshall Medical Simulation Center. Back in February, Senator Capito visited campus to celebrate this award along with additional funding.
"Marshall University's medical program plays an integral role in preparing the future doctors of our state," Senator Capito said. "I am proud to have helped secure this funding to provide students and faculty with the best resources and facilities and reinforce Marshall's role as a leader in medical education and research. Through my work in the Senate, I remain committed to expanding research opportunities, strengthening our workforce, and providing West Virginians with the quality healthcare they deserve."
"Senator Capito's leadership and steadfast support through the appropriations process continue to make a meaningful difference for Marshall University and the people of West Virginia. Her investment in our strategic growth areas - research, workforce development and innovation - amplifies our ability to serve both our state and the nation. We are deeply grateful for her partnership. Through her leadership, Senator Capito continues to open doors and expand opportunities for future generations of West Virginians," Brad D. Smith, President of Marshall University, said.
