We find ourselves in confusing - and often scary - times. Amid federal layoffs and a lingering shutdown, it's difficult to find stability in the services and institutions so many people rely on.
Recently, Disability Scoop published an article highlighting the government shutdown's impact on people with disabilities and disability service organizations across the country.
"Given how many people with disabilities rely on benefits from government programs, this shutdown is especially harmful for the disability community," Maria Town, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, told the publication. "We know that the longer the shutdown lasts, the more we can expect disruptions in administrative work and delays in services, including the processing of disability benefits applications and Medicaid/Medicare claims. It is crucial for lawmakers to reach a deal to fund the government."
Earlier this week we announced that the government shutdown has forced us to make some changes to the way our organization operates. These changes include providing more information and referrals instead of taking on more casework, and a slight reduction in our intake department's phone hours.
Even with these changes - and surrounded by so much chaos and confusion - we're still here.
Our belief in this work and our commitment to this mission are unwavering. No matter the challenges or obstacles that are thrown in our path, we aren't giving up.
Now is not the time for silence or complacency - it's a time for advocacy. Collective voices and a united vision can make a difference.
We're in this together, and we're still here.
