Plan to Celebrate White Cane Day

HHSC will join the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to celebrate White Cane Day on Oct. 15.

White Cane Day is a national observance highlighting the white cane as a symbol of independence and empowerment for people who are blind or visually impaired. The occasion also celebrates the abilities, contributions and successes of people in the blind community.

In Austin, White Cane Day will be recognized at the school campus, located at 1100 W. 45th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature guest speakers, information booths, accessible activities and musical performances.

"The HHSC Blind Children's Vocational Discovery and Development Program is proud to be part of the annual celebration of White Cane Day across the state," said Joanie Cooksey, director of HHSC Children's Autism and Blindness Services. "These events showcase the ways that people with visual impairments live independently. Our services provide children and families with the supports needed to create lifelong independent skills."
