Dr. Michael Stauch, an assistant professor of history in the Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences and Education, will lead a discussion about his new book, "Wildcat of the Streets: Detroit in the Age of Community Policing," today, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. in the History Department Library in University Hall Room 5260.
The book reframes the history of community policing, locating its origins in the upheavals in cities across the country in the 1960s and tracing that history into the present, as well as contextualizes Detroit's status as a crucial site of experimentation with police reform that contributed to the rise of community policing.

"I wrote this book to preserve the lessons of police reform in the postwar United States for future generations committed to creating a better world," Stauch said. "I hope it demonstrates just how vital history can be in shaping contemporary debates about our shared future."
Stauch is a historian of the modern United States whose research and teaching focus on cities, social movements and politics. "Wildcat of the Streets" is his first book and was published with the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2025. His writing and commentary have also appeared in national outlets such as the Washington Post.
"Wildcat of the Streets: Detroit in the Age of Community Policing" is available for $55 on the University of Pennsylvania Press website.
