The City of Durham Selects CDM Smith to Complete the Durham Water Treatment Plant Progressive Design-Build

The city of Durham selected CDM Smith, supported by two subcontractor partners, to complete the $490 million greenfield Durham Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) progressive design-build in the Triangle area of North Carolina.

The goal of the project is to provide reliable, sustainable, high-quality drinking water for the city. The DWTP will be initially designed to treat and pump a maximum daily demand of 20 MGD and will have multiple mechanisms to treat the variable water quality from Jordan Lake. The DWTP Administration and Operations Buildings will be LEED Gold certified and the DWTP will contribute to the city's efforts to achieve an ENVISION certification for the Jordan Lake Water Supply Program. The project is scheduled for completion in 2031.

With nearly 30 years of specialized design, operations and piloting experience with Jordan Lake water, CDM Smith's deep understanding of the lake's seasonal and complex water quality dynamics is essential for optimizing advanced treatment processes at the DWTP, such as ozone and PFAS removal.

This significant progressive design-build project allows CDM Smith to apply our drinking water expertise, leadership and support for the city of Durham to secure its water future.
