Should You Buy Hewlett Packard Enterprise Stock For Its Cash

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) produced free cash flow equal to 5.6% of its market value over the past year, against 4.3% for the median S&P 500 company. A yield that high marks either a business on sale or one the market expects to shrink, and the price appears to assume HPE's server and networking sales will not keep producing this much cash. So how much of that cash can you count on?

HPE's Cash Is At A Three-Year High

HPE has produced free cash in every twelve-month period since mid-2023, but only the past year brought this much. The total reached $4.16 billion, against $0.225 billion in the twelve months before. After lenders are served, that cash belongs to owners whether or not HPE pays it out. If the market comes to give that cash more credit, the share price could rise to reflect it.

The cash comes from a bigger business. Revenue reached $41.9 billion over the past year, up 26.6%. That period includes the Juniper Networks business HPE bought. In the latest quarter, management said orders were led by demand in traditional servers, AI systems, and networking. HPE spent 37.9% of the cash its operations brought in on capital spending.

Part of the cash must serve lenders first. HPE's debt minus its cash came to $14.0 billion at the end of July 2026, or 18.9% of its market value. Against market value plus that debt, the yield is 4.7%. After selling its Telco Solutions business, management said on its September 2, 2026 call that it would retire $1.25 billion of notes maturing that month.

Management Expects Thinner Margins As AI Sales Grow

HPE already earns a thin profit on each sale. Its operating margin was 7.8% over the past year, against 18.5% for the S&P 500 taken as one company. That margin has risen from 6.2% the year before.

Management expects some near-term pressure on that profit. On its September 2 call, management said gross margin should move back toward historical levels as AI systems grow and traditional server prices normalize, and the operating margin should fall in fiscal Q4 2026 on a higher mix of AI systems and on pricing. Both are forecasts, not reported falls. Shortages of parts, DDR5 among them, have also limited how many traditional servers HPE can ship, management said.

Management is working on margins and supply. It expects $600 million a year of savings from the Juniper Networks acquisition by the end of fiscal 2028, and the company is seeking multiyear supply agreements with its partners. It also raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth forecast to 15% at the midpoint, from 10%. So the doubt is about how much HPE keeps from each sale, not about a business that is shrinking.

What HPE Expects Its Cash To Do Next

Management raised its fiscal 2027 free cash flow target to at least $5 billion, from $4.5 billion, citing strong demand and a sizable backlog. HPE booked more orders in fiscal Q3 2026 than in any prior quarter. On September 30, 2026, it announced a $1.2 billion order from Vultr for AMD Helios systems.

HPE's cash has grown over the past year, and its operating margin has risen so far. Management expects the operating margin to dip in fiscal Q4, even as it raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted operating margin range to 14% to 15%, and net debt still has first claim on part of the cash. The operating margin and free cash flow HPE reports for fiscal Q4 2026, expected in December 2026, are the figures to watch.
