Captain’s Log: A Week Aboard Blackbeard’s in the Bahamas

In August 2025, a group of travelers from Diventures in Alpharetta joined Trip Leader Harrison Barnfield-Jones for a week aboard Blackbeard's in the Bahamas. Blackbeard's is often described as "camping on the water." Rather than staying at a resort, guests spend the week living aboard a sailboat, traveling between dive sites and embracing a simple, dive-focused lifestyle.

The experience is intentionally no-frills, allowing divers to maximize their time in the water while exploring some of the Bahamas' most remote dive sites. "This trip is an easy recommendation for divers of all experience levels, especially those considering their first liveaboard adventure," Harrison said. "It offers an incredible diving experience without the high price tag of many other liveaboards, making it the perfect introduction to this style of diving."

Days are spent exploring new sites, sharing meals onboard, and relaxing between dives. "The energy on board is contagious," Harrison said. "With multiple dives each day, the excitement never really fades. It's dive, eat, sleep, and repeat."

What makes cruising the Bahamas stand out is the incredible variety of diving experiences it offers," Harrison said. "Throughout the voyage, you can enjoy deep dives, shallow reef dives, drift dives, wreck dives, night dives, and even shark-feeding dives. With such a diverse range of dive profiles, every day brings something new and exciting."

One of Harrison's favorite sites was Smuggler's Plane, an aircraft wreck resting in just 20 feet of water. The shallow depth allows for extended bottom times, allowing divers to spend up to 90 minutes exploring the wreck and the marine life that surrounds it.

"The history of the plane makes the dive even more fascinating," Harrison said. "There's something incredibly surreal about seeing an aircraft, something built for the sky, resting beneath the ocean's surface."

Marine life was another highlight of the trip. "When it comes to marine life in the Bahamas, it's all about the sharks for me," Harrison said. "We encountered reef sharks on every single dive throughout the trip, which was absolutely incredible and a great indicator of a healthy ecosystem."

With multiple dives each day, access to remote sites, and close encounters with marine life, it's easy to see why Blackbeard's remains a favorite among Diventures travelers.

"For many, this trip is just the beginning," Harrison said. "The experiences, confidence, and excitement gained onboard can inspire a lifetime of incredible scuba diving adventures and unforgettable memories beneath the surface."
