2025 Crop and Livestock Statistics Are In: Local Agriculture Hits a Record-Breaking $1.1 Billion in Gross Production Value, Highlighting Continued Strength and Resilience

The Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures has released the 2025 agricultural production statistics, confirming another year of resilience and sustained growth for San Luis Obispo County's diverse farming and ranching economy. Total agricultural value surpassed the $1 billion mark for the fifth consecutive year, reaching an all-time high of $1,111,680,000. This record reflects both the adaptability of local producers and the strength of the county's wide range of commodities, supported by varied microclimates and dynamic growing conditions.

Fluctuating weather patterns, shifting markets, and rising input costs presented challenges throughout the year, yet overall production remained strong. As in previous years, strawberries were the county's highest-valued crop, followed by wine grapes and cattle and calves. Together, these three commodities accounted for more than 53 percent of the county's total agricultural value.
The top ten commodities by value in 2025 were:

1. Strawberries
2. Wine Grapes
3. Cattle and Calves
4. Avocados
5. Broccoli
6. Cauliflower
7. Vegetable and Ornamental Transplants
8. Lettuce, Leaf
9. Lettuce, Head
10. Lemons

These figures represent gross values only and do not reflect net profits received by producers or secondary economic benefits generated by agricultural activity.
Growing conditions in 2025 were generally favorable. Late-winter and early-spring rainfall provided much-needed moisture for rangelands and field crops, while a cool spring with minimal frost supported strong development across key commodities. Moderate summer temperatures benefited both coastal and inland crops, though brief periods of extreme heat and late-season dryness introduced challenges for selected sectors.

Fruit and nut crops led all categories, reaching a five-year high of more than $649 million. Strawberries continued to anchor the sector, while avocados saw increased production despite lower prices. Wine grapes stabilized after prior market volatility, posting a modest one-percent increase. The animal industry posted one of its strongest year-over-year gains, with total value up 19 percent due to record-high cattle prices driven by tight national supplies. Field crops grew five percent overall, achieving their highest value in five years. Nursery products saw a slight one-percent decline, while vegetable crops remained an important and consistent contributor to the county's agricultural landscape.

"Farming and ranching remain strong, vital industries in the county, supported by the remarkable diversity that makes San Luis Obispo County agriculture so resilient. Our producers continually adapt to changing conditions and challenges, ensuring agriculture remains a cornerstone of our economy and community. The 2025 Crop Report reflects this strength, showing a robust, diverse, and adaptable industry that maintains stability even as individual sectors fluctuate, " said Martin Settevendemie, Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer.
