Lowell Man Sentenced for Felony Delay of Mail

HAMMOND - Zachary Nelson, 27 years old, of Lowell, Indiana, was sentenced to probation by United States District Court Judge Gretchen Lund after pleading guilty to felony delay of mail, announced United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred.

"Zachary Nelson, a Rural Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service, on multiple occasions in 2025 intentionally failed to deliver hundreds of mailers to the addresses on his assigned mail route, including mailers for private businesses and for Medicare. He sometimes threw the mailers in the garbage, abusing his position of public trust to conceal his actions. The U.S. Postal Service trusted Nelson to properly deliver the mail that was placed in his custody, and he chose to betray that trust. Government officials are held accountable to the people they serve. This case was investigated by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin F. Wolff. The US Postal Inspector General's Office and the US Attorney's Office will always work diligently to deter, detect, and prosecute government fraud whenever it occurs," said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Mildred.

This sentencing represents the hard work and dedication by USPS OIG Special Agents working with the U.S. Attorney's Office to bring charges on this significant mail theft investigation," said Special Agent in Charge Dennus Bishop, U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Central Area Field Office. The United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General along with our law enforcement partners, remain committed to safeguarding the U.S. Mail and ensuring the accountability and integrity of U.S. Postal Service employees."
