Distinguished Alumni Come Out to Celebrate Hawk Basketball

University of Hartford alumni, Rosen Society, and Founder's Society members turned out to cheer on the Hawks in a men and women's basketball doubleheader against Johnson & Wales on January 31. At halftime of the women's game, the University celebrated the 20th anniversary of the historic 2005-06 women's team and its remarkable season. That squad finished with a 27-4 record and earned the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, upsetting Temple in the opening round.

The anniversary celebration featured a short documentary in which the current team reflected on how the 2005-06 squad's special season has inspired them and helped shape the program's trajectory. The tribute also included a video message from Connecticut basketball legend Jennifer Rizzotti, who coached that team and, although unable to attend in person, shared her congratulations and memories.

Another distinguished alum surprised spectators at the men's game. Vin Baker traveled from Boston, where he is an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, who were playing the Celtics the next day.To date, Baker remains the greatest men's basketball player in the University of Hartford's history. He was drafted into the NBA by the Bucks in 1993, played for seven teams in his 13-year NBA career, and was a four-time All-Star. He was also a member of the gold-medal winning 2000 U.S. Men's Olympic Team.

On Saturday, Baker sat courtside with UHart President Lawrence P. Ward, visited the team during halftime for high-fives and words of encouragement, and engaged with fans taking photos and giving autographs.

Afterwards, Baker visited the team in their locker room to give his congratulations on their win in an amazing game.
