MADISON - Gov. Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR), announced the state has distributed over $2.2 billion of shared revenue and property tax credit payments to local governments across the state so far this year. These distributions are a crucial component of the state's commitment to supporting local governments so they can provide essential services to their communities, such as repairing local streets, bolstering police, fire, and EMS, and supporting local libraries, parks, public health, and more, all while reducing the tax burden for property owners. All told, so far in 2026, these distributions have provided over $1.7 billion in direct relief for Wisconsin property owners and over $584 million in support to local governments. "I've always believed that the state should be a partner in, not an obstacle to, our local communities' success," said Gov, Evers. "Whether it's fixing local roads, investing in emergency services, ensuring kids and families have clean and safe water, expanding affordable and accessible transportation and housing, or uplifting local libraries and parks and public health facilities, so much of this good work to connect the dots and serve our communities is done at the local level and these funds help make it happen. That's why I was proud to fight for and secure this extra funding to help meet both the basic and unique needs of all our communities, and I am proud to see the positive impacts so far." After a decade of shared revenue being cut or held flat and local governments being asked to do more with less, Gov. Evers championed efforts to increase support for shared revenue, which is the revenue collected by the state that is returned to local governments. As part of negotiations for the 2023-25 biennial budget, Gov. Evers was proud to work across the aisle with Republican leadership to deliver on his promise to increase funding for shared revenue and local communities across the state. Thanks to these efforts, in 2023, Gov. Evers signed 2023 Wisconsin Act 12, which provided a generational increase in the state's commitment to shared revenue and tied local government funding to the state sales tax going forward, allowing for future growth. For both the county and municipal aid and supplemental county and municipal aid programs, local governments were eligible to receive additional aid through a 3.4 percent increase from sales tax revenues. This made local governments eligible for an additional $3.9 million in funding for the county and municipal aid program and an additional $1.4 million in funding for the supplemental county and municipal aid program. These state aids are mostly general, unrestricted aids that can be used for any activity approved by the local governing body. Specifically, supplemental county and municipal aid is the only restricted aid that must be used for specific purposes such as law enforcement, fire protection, emergency medical services, emergency response communications, public works, courts, and transportation-no supplemental county and municipal aid amounts may be used for administrative services. In addition to shared revenue, the July distribution includes the final 2026 property tax credit payments to local governments. DOR distributed $335 million for School Levy Tax Credit in May, bringing the total to $1.275 billion for the program in 2026, as well as $289.9 million for Lottery and Gaming Credit in March. In total, the state has provided over $1.7 billion in direct relief for Wisconsin property owners and over $584 million to local governments. The total distributions for 2026 to date are below. |
