Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson made the following statement today after the Michigan Senate passed Senate Bills 961-964, known as the Michigan Voting Rights Act, to strengthen protections against voter suppression and discrimination:
"Today, the state Senate passed the Michigan Voting Rights Act (MVRA), advancing the fight against voter suppression and taking a stand for Michigan voters. States must take the lead to reclaim our rights and protections since the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the federal Voting Rights Act just a few weeks ago.
"I'm grateful to members of the Senate for their perseverance and leadership. I now urge House lawmakers to pass the MVRA and send these essential legal protections to the Governor's desk. We must make America's promise of freedom and equality for all a reality for all Michiganders. As always, I will stand up to anyone who tries to take power from the people - no matter what threats come our way. But it's up to all of us now. Together, Michigan can show the country who we are, what we believe in - and how to fight for what's right."
