Reserve Your Spot for Free Tax Assistance at the Library

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (February 6, 2026) - The New Brunswick Free Public Library is again hosting the United Way of Central Jersey (UWCJ) and Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) of the Rutgers Business School for the annual VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, offering free income tax filing assistance for taxpayers earning up to $75,000 for the tax year 2025.

Taxpayers can make an appointment to meet with the Rutgers BAP student volunteers by calling 732-745-5108 x2725. Taxpayers then pick up an intake packet from the library or print the checklist and intake forms from the library's website here. Participants must complete all forms before their appointment.

The appointments consist of a 20-minute interview, after which tax filers will have to wait while volunteers prepare the returns. Appointments are available on Fridays and Saturdays from Feb. 6 to April 4 (except March 14 to 21 and April 3).

The library will also place a drop box in the main lobby for anyone who wishes to have their taxes filed remotely. The drop box will be available from the last week of January through March 31.

To use the drop box, filers need to fill out the required forms, enclose the needed documents, and drop the packet into the locked box. Taxpayers will receive a phone call for their intake interview and a call to collect the completed returns.

Tax filings are handled by IRS-certified volunteers. Library staff cannot access the drop box or answer specific tax-filing questions.

Details, downloadable intake forms, and the checklist of all required items are available on the library's website at www.nbfpl.org/income-tax-filing.
