Thomas – Fire Safety Officer & Sales Representative

24 February 2026 Fire Safety

At some point, some service technicians in fire protection ask themselves the question: How can I advance my career to become a fire protection officer or move into sales? The story of Thomas from the Koblenz branch shows how this step can be successful.

From gas and water installation to fire protection

Thomas now works at CWS Fire Safety in Koblenz. His career began in the traditional trades: he trained as a gas and water installer, then spent a year in customer service. He then decided he wanted to learn more about business and completed further training as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant. This was followed by years in sales - from car sales to the fashion industry. Later, he even founded his own online shop for custom-made bathroom radiators - with the aim of being self-employed and having more time for his child.

In 2016, he moved to fire protection and started as a service technician. Over ten years, he gained in-depth practical experience in the field. "I know fire protection technology from the ground up - and I know what is necessary." This combination of technical knowledge and commercial thinking later proved decisive for his further training as a fire protection officer and fire protection consultant.

In 2025, his supervisor approached him about a possible career advancement. Given his experience as a technician and his understanding of commercial and sales processes, it was clear that training to become a fire safety officer was the logical next step, coupled with a sales role as a fire safety consultant.
Step by step, Thomas has thus grown increasingly into his new role in 2025/2026.

The change meant:

  • more responsibility
  • a stronger advisory role
  • closer cooperation with decision-makers
  • new sales targets

The transition from technician to a consulting or sales role brings with it new challenges. These include different target agreements, sales responsibility and a changed billing model. This was new to Thomas. "Of course, it's different from pure technology. But if you're willing to learn, you grow into it."

What does a fire safety officer and a fire safety consultant do?

In Thomas's case, both roles complement each other to form a holistic approach to fire safety consulting: as a fire safety officer, he is responsible for organising and developing preventive and organisational fire safety measures. He analyses risks during inspections, develops practical solutions, draws up fire safety regulations, organises training courses and instructs employees on how to behave in the event of a fire - including training fire safety and evacuation assistants. He also oversees the implementation of legal requirements and acts as a liaison between authorities, insurers and management.

In his role as a sales consultant specialising in fire protection, he applies this expertise in a targeted manner when advising customers. He evaluates fire protection concepts as well as official and customer requirements, reviews escape and rescue plans, and uses this information to create tailor-made offers. His focus is not purely on sales, but on providing honest, solution-oriented advice with the aim of offering customers genuine added value and security.

Why further training is particularly useful for technicians

Experienced service technicians in particular have the ideal prerequisites for further training as fire safety officers or fire safety consultants:

  • in-depth understanding of technical systems
  • experience with standards and regulations
  • practical perspective for realistic solutions
  • direct customer contact

Thomas describes it as follows: "When I walk through a company today, I can immediately see where action needs to be taken. Either I already know a practical solution or I research and find one." With additional qualifications, the field of application expands significantly - to include consulting, training and sales.

Tips for technicians

Thomas gives clear recommendations to fellow technicians who also want to develop their skills:

  1. Show initiative: "Talk openly with your supervisor if you want to develop further."
  2. Take a proactive approach to further training: Training as a fire safety officer is a crucial building block. Specialist knowledge creates confidence - including in customer meetings.
  3. Be open to new roles: Those who are willing to take on responsibility and think outside the box automatically broaden their horizons.
  4. Commitment pays off: "If you are committed, hard-working and diligent, you can become anything you want to be."
