PORT ANGELES, Wash. - Olympic Interagency Fire Managers have declared the start of fire season due to hot and dry weather conditions. In the last three weeks, firefighter crews have extinguished several small fires that spread from abandoned campfires.
Fire managers are asking all to follow these simple steps:
-
Never leave campfires unattended. Before leaving, fully extinguish fires by drowning them with water, stirring the ashes, and feeling for heat before walking away. Follow all fire rules and regulations when recreating and help prevent human-caused wildfires.
-
Use only designated fire rings and follow all posted fire restrictions, which may change as the season progresses.
-
Never ignite fireworks on federal lands. Fireworks are always prohibited in national parks and national forests.
-
Do not smoke on trails or in vegetated areas. Smoke only in designated areas and dispose of cigarette debris in proper receptacles.
-
Tow safely, maintain your vehicle, and avoid parking over dry grass. Hot vehicle parts can ignite vegetation.
How to Report a Wildfire If you see smoke or flames, report it immediately:
-
Call 911
-
Provide as much detail as possible, including the location, size, smoke color, and whether anyone is in danger.
