From Oct. 2 to10, Minister Dale Nally will be in Las Vegas, Nevada and Dallas, Texas to engage with iGaming and blockchain stakeholders to help inform implementation of Alberta's iGaming strategy, discuss further opportunities to support the growth of the blockchain sector, and strengthen industry partnerships and investment.

The minister will meet with various industry leaders, international regulators and business experts to better understand emerging issues within the iGaming and blockchain sectors and identify ways to streamline regulatory processes while maintaining robust oversight standards.

"Alberta has a lot of competitive advantages that make it a great place to do business, and our government is proud to share that news with others. The discussions we have in Texas and Nevada will support our long-term commitment to innovation, maintaining a supportive business climate and cultivating the responsible development of our gaming and digital industries."

Quick facts

  • Alberta is now home to more than 4,200 technology companies, an increase from 1,200 technology companies in 2018.
  • Alberta is home to an estimated 47 blockchain companies, and at least 13 operational cryptocurrency mining facilities, with additional facilities currently under development.
  • The iGaming Alberta Act was passed in May, marking the first phase of implementation for Alberta's iGaming strategy.
  • Engagement on Alberta's iGaming regulations is expected to run through the fall and will address a range of issues, including social responsibility, advertising, consumer protection and key provisions to support the broader regulatory framework.
  • Currently, PlayAlberta is the province's only legal, regulated iGaming site, and is operated by NeoPollard Interactive under the direction and management of AGLC.
  • Based on a recent survey data, it is estimated that PlayAlberta only captures between 23 and 32 per cent of the total market, meaning that between 68 and 77 per cent - the vast majority of players in the province - place at least some of their bets on unregulated private iGaming websites.
