Mayor Bowser to Host State of Schools, Highlight Progress Across DC Public and Public Charter Schools

(Washington, DC) - On Thursday, September 4 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by members of her education team to highlight progress across DC's public education landscape and to share their vision for continued student success. DC is a national model for urban education, with student achievement on the rise, historic investments in schools, and a strong focus on opportunity. During this event, the Mayor and her education team will deliver a data-driven overview of the District's educational gains and outline key priorities for the 2025-26 school year and beyond.

The school year began as Mayor Bowser and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education announced that student proficiency rates in English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and math have reached their highest levels since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the ELA proficiency rate is the highest ever recorded in the District. DC is also the fastest-improving urban school system in the nation, the result of nearly two decades of sustained investments in educators, facilities, and supports for students and families.

For families seeking resources for the new school year, the 2025 Back to School Guide is available at backtoschool.dc.gov.
