NEWARK, NJ - NJ TRANSIT's Board of Directors took another step forward to complete the bus modernization program, authorizing the purchase of 260 40-foot transit style buses and 26 zero-emission buses. This is the final authorization required for NJ TRANSIT to have a fully modernized bus and rail fleet by 2031, fulfilling the pledge by President & CEO Kris Kolluri to replace every vehicle in need of replacement. The new buses will provide customers with increased reliability while offering reduced operating and maintenance costs.
"Authorizing these bus purchases marks the necessary final step toward the full modernization of our fleet by 2031 for the first time in the agency's 45-year history, a goal Governor Murphy and I set to strengthen NJ TRANSIT for the people it serves," said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri. "Customers will see the impact through vastly improved reliability, enhanced safety features and a customer experience our riders deserve."
The new buses, which will replace aging 40-foot buses, will include passenger amenities such as USB charging ports, security cameras, blind spot cameras and turn warning systems to enhance the customer experience and safety.
The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors approved the purchase of up to 260 40-foot clean diesel transit buses and up to 26 40-foot zero-emission buses, at a cost not to exceed $506,711,200.79, plus 10% for contingencies, subject to the availability of funds.
NJ TRANSIT currently has 1,228 40-foot transit/suburban buses, including 121 buses operated by private carriers, the majority of which are over age and due for replacement. The newly authorized purchases are part of the agency's plan to replace its outdated 40-foot transit buses with new 40-foot diesel transit buses and Zero-Emission Buses (ZEBs) in keeping with NJ TRANSIT's Bus Fleet Strategy and its strategic plan, NJT 2030 (A 10-Year Plan).
