History Museum and Casa Azul Hosting Quinceañera Event September 26

The program begins with a discussion of the Quinceañera, a coming-of-age tradition for 15-year-old girls in several Latin American countries. Local experts taking part include Marisa González (Educational Developer, University Teaching and Learning Commons, and Adjunct Lecturer, Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at UNCG), Liliana Lira-River (UNCG professor and owner of Lily & Co Beauty Lounge), Dr. Yuliana Rodriguez (Clinical Associate Professor in the Human Development and Family Science program within the School of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill), and Adamarys Avalos (Co-owner of J&A Choreography). Following the discussion there will be a fashion show of Quinceañera dresses.

Also opening that day is a new Community Voices display chronicling some of Casa Azul's activities since the organization was established in 2010. Casa Azul of Greensboro's mission is to provide an environment and resources for creative expression of Latino culture in our local community and the Triad area through projects and partnerships. The display will remain on view through October. The Community Voices space in the museum lobby hosts displays developed and produced by local organizations to highlight significant and sometimes unheard parts of our city's history. Every year the museum works with two to three community organizations to develop these temporary displays.
