MOFA response to US Secretary of State Rubio reiterating US support for Taiwan

October 26, 2025

During an in-flight interview on October 25, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that the United States would not be "walking away" from Taiwan in exchange for a trade agreement with China, stating that no one was contemplating such a move.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung welcomes this statement and thanks the United States for publicly reiterating its firm stance on Taiwan. Since President Donald Trump took office, the US administration has repeatedly made clear at various international forums its support for and its long-standing policy concerning Taiwan. For example, a joint statement released after the trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea in September alongside the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a joint statement by the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7), emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and opposed any unilateral change to the status quo through the use of force.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) continues to monitor interactions between the United States and China. Communication channels between Taiwan and the United States are open, and Taiwan will remain in contact with the United States to ensure that Taiwan-US ties continue to steadily deepen and that Taiwan's interests are not affected.
