Sulphur, Okla. - Chickasaw National Recreation Area is seeking one applicant to cut and remove hay from three former agricultural fields within the park.
The selected applicant will cut and remove approximately 120 acres of hay, consisting primarily of Johnsongrass and clover. Hay must be cut and removed between July 15 and July 31, 2026. If directed by park officials, the applicant may be required to complete a second cut later in the summer.
Johnsongrass is an invasive, non-native grass that outcompetes native vegetation. Annual cutting and removal helps reduce its spread and supports restoration of native plant communities. Restoring native grasses and forbs benefits birds and other wildlife and enhances habitat quality across the park. Once Johnsongrass is sufficiently reduced, native vegetation can be re-established.
A $2,000 permit fee is required. Interested individuals must submit a letter of intent postmarked by May 30, 2026, to:
Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Attn: Mason Stearns
901 W. 1st StreetSulphur, OK 73086
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Only one application per household will be accepted. The letter of intent must describe the applicant's experience with hay cutting and removal and include a mailing address and daytime phone number. If more than one qualified application is received, a lottery drawing will be conducted.
For hay lease questions, contact Mason Stearns at 580-618-8805.
